Why Earning Money Is All About People

Trouble earning money? You are not alone. If you never earn money yourself, it might be difficult to know how and where to start (I am not talking about having a job). You might have a lot of fears and doubts, and you might have difficulties understanding how making money works. I have been there, and for a very long time, I have been desperately trying to figure out how to do it. How the heck do I earn money myself?

In a recent blog post, I explained how important it is to become a problem solver, that basically anything you see is a problem that can be solved. And where problems can be solved, money can be made.

And I have understood this for a while, but even then money didn't come in. And I was wondering what I did wrong. Originally I was a graphic designer, and have been doing that for many years. I love to create designs, art, and illustrations. And I consider myself relatively professional and good at it.

So when I started my “earning money myself career”, I naturally started with creating and selling designs. I tried websites like Zazzle, Society6, and Redbubble. Did I have a strategy? Not really. I thought I would just create good designs, upload them and start making money.

And that is what I did, first I created 10 designs, and even after a month, I made no sales. So I created 50 more designs, again no sales. And I knew these designs were good because I have been working for a company that sold similar products and designs.

After a half year, I finally made my first sale. I thought that's it, It is starting. But sadly it wasn't. It was the only sale I made that year. I thought; “hmm, maybe the more designs I have the better.” So I started creating designs like crazy. And after a few months, I created more than 1,000 designs. Do you think this did the trick? Nope! Still, barely making any sales.

And although I earn around $50,- dollars per month from my 1,000 designs today. It clearly wasn't worth the time and energy I spent on it.

It wasn't until recently that I really started to understand what was missing in my "strategy". You see, I am kind of an introverted person, I can be very shy and don't necessarily like to be around many people. And that was the problem, that was the missing piece of the puzzle. People.

That is when I started to realize that people are probably the most important part of the puzzle. And it's funny, our language has so many different words that correspond to people. Think about; groups, communities, audiences, followers, subscribers, clients, customers, etc. The meaning is all the same. It's a group of people. People have emotions, all sorts of interests, needs, etc. They are the ones with money and decide what they want to spend it on.

Of course, I knew that people were the ones that would have to buy my designs, but I never realized how important it was (or I just ignored it). I was hoping I'll just upload some designs and start making money. When that didn't work, I started to increase the quantity, that did help a little, but it was so minimal that it was pointless.

Here are a few examples of why building a large audience is important:
  • A YouTuber builds a large following, suddenly people pay him to promote their products.
  • Facebook builds a large user base, with high engagements, suddenly people pay Facebook to place ads.
  • An influencer builds a large following, suddenly people pay him to promote their brand or company.
  • If you are a farmer, you need people to buy your goods
  • If you are an electrician, you need people that have problems with electricity.
  • If you sell lightbulbs, you need people that want to buy them from you.
  • And so on and so on... I hope you get my point.

And these are just a few examples, but the fact is, if you take people out of the equation, all these brands, websites, and companies stop making any money.

Every business needs people, the reason is simple. People have money. A large group of people can hold millions if not billions of cash.

So, from now on, if you want to earn money, you have to understand that it is people that have money and they need to be willing to give you that money. If not, you are not going to earn any.

And in my case, my designs are competing with thousands if not hundreds of thousands of other designs and designers. All hoping to earn simple money online. The fact is though, it are those that know how to build a large audience, those that know how to bring products in front of others that are earning the most money.

So, if you consider earning money, start with people, and build a large following first. Let them get to know you and your designs. Then, when you have a large following, you will start making money.

If you want to earn money, you need people that want what you have. So instead of focusing on making money, you have to focus on what kind of value you can add. What is it that people want? What would they pay for? What problems do they have that you can solve?

Please understand that building an audience takes a lot of time, especially if you are not willing to invest much money. If you have money to spend, I suggest you read the book: One Million Followers: How I Built a Massive Social Following in 30 Days by Brendan Kane.

Conclusion

One, if not the most important part of making money is people. People have money. If you are not people-focused you are not going to earn any money.
